Project: C. Oran Little Oral History Project

Interview Summary

C. Oran Little, former Dean of the University of Kentucky's College of Agriculture, talks about his first few years in this position. He describes the rising emphasis on food science and the change of the name of Human and Environmental Science to Family and Consumer Science within the University of Kentucky. Little discusses the reorganization the College of Agriculture once he accepted the deanship. He recalls that enrollment in the college had declined, and so he approved a broad study to ask employers what they wanted from the graduates. Little states that they found that they were not doing a good job in the area of communications. Little explains that the College of Agriculture also needed to fill some faculty positions especially for their graduate course, and several associate dean positions opened at the same time. Little describes Dr. Jack Hyde, the chair of the Department of Agronomy, who was brought in as Associate Dean of Administration. He discusses working with university presidents and the central administration. Little remembers that Dr. David Roselle was willing and available to meeting with him. He also describes working with Art Gallagher. Little states that in 1988 he began to put together a strategic plan for the college.
