Interview Summary
Samuel DuBois Cook is an African American political scientist, Duke University Trustee Emeritus, and former president of Dillard University. In this interview, Cook discusses growing up in Georgia, playing football while attending Morehouse College, and his classmate, Martin Luther King, Jr. He talks about receiving his MA and PhD from Ohio State University and his dissertation about democratic thought. Cook speaks about teaching at Duke University starting in 1966 as their first black professor and the few racial incidents he encountered. Faculty positions he held at several universities, including Atlanta University, and the challenges and excitement of being president of Dillard University are also discussed.Interview Accession
