Interview Summary

Emmett W. Bashful is an African American political scientist, who is the Chancellor Emeritus and Professor Emeritus of Political Science at Southern University, New Orleans. In this interview, Bashful speaks about his childhood in Louisiana, his undergraduate education, and receiving his PhD in political science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He discusses his role in establishing a political science department at Florida A & M University and his doctoral dissertation about the Florida Supreme Court's judicial selection. Bashful talks about the establishment of Southern University at New Orleans in 1959 and serving as its chancellor for twenty-eight years. Bashful's community involvement and membership on various New Orleans' organizations and national boards is also discussed.
