Interview with Terrence Rogers, August 27, 2021
Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Terry Rogers served in Ukraine, 1993-1995, in Community Development. Terry was a financial analyst when Peace Corps placed an ad in the Wall Street Journal seeking volunteers to go to Ukraine after the collapse of the Soviet Union. His training was outside Kyiv, which he described as a “dark” city in a “fresh” country at the time. Terry was placed in Cherkasy for nine months. There he worked with city government on moving from communism to privatization. For the remainder of his service he was posted in Poltava at the Cooperative Institute, where he taught university students (in English) courses like banking and business English. Peace Corps was able to prove that it was viable in Ukraine, but, Terry said, while it has an important role, it’s a limited one. He stayed in Ukraine for twelve years after service, using his country knowledge working for the US embassy and USAID.Interview Accession
