Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Leslie Nadeau Yauckoes served as a TEFL English teacher in Morocco from 1968-1970. She served in Marrakesh, where she taught high school students from various backgrounds. She knew she wanted to become a Peace Corps volunteer from a young age. She discusses the language, cultural, and pedagogical training her Peace Corps cohort received. In service, her students were very receptive to her English classes. She also started an intramural soccer club. Leslie shared living quarters with another Peace Corps Volunteer while serving in Marrakesh and still stays in contact with several of the volunteers from her cohort. She enjoyed traveling in Morocco, getting to know her fellow teachers, fellow volunteers, and her students, and to this day loves Moroccan cuisine. She also discusses some of the difficulties that came with being a western woman in 1960s Morocco, and lessons learned from her Peace Corps experience.Interview Accession
