Interview with Joyce Jenkins, February 3, 2021
Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Joyce Jenkins was an attorney in the private sector before, at age 64 with two grown children, she decided to look for something new, so she joined the Peace Corps. She had asked for a placement in Asia, but was invited to serve in Cambodia, which she did in the education sector from July 2011 to July 2013. Jenkins trained in Ang Tasom and was assigned to Kraol Krabei. Jenkins taught six days a week at a high school and also traveled to other schools. She also taught community groups at night. Her method of teaching was interactive, including games. Language was challenging, especially since most locals were speaking English with her. The Cambodians were supportive and friendly. She established relationships, especially with kids who could not afford school. Jenkins got a computer and projector as well as internet connection for the school to expose students to the outside world. On vacation, she traveled to India, Thailand, and Vietnam, as well as other areas within Cambodia.Interview Accession
