Interview with Ann Reilly, February 4, 2021
Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Ann Reilly served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Marshall Islands from 1979 to 1981 in the Health Education Program. After completing college and working for several years, Ann wanted a change and applied to Peace Corps, to serve while experiencing other cultures. Her training consisted of language, culture, and technical skills. It began in Beaufort, South Carolina, and continued in Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia. Arriving in the Marshall Islands, she found it strikingly different than the training sites. After a short stay in Majuro, she traveled by boat to a remote assignment site, Namorik Atoll. Ann worked primarily with the island’s women, providing health and nutrition education. The interview discusses training, forming bonds with fellow volunteers and locals, work and life at her site, travel to other Pacific Islands, and reflections on Peace Corps service.Interview Accession
