Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Jean Fontaine served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Peru from 1967-69. Prior to Peace Corps Jean was a student majoring in psychology. She was part of a unique program training in language and cultural training between her Junior and Senior year. One of the trainers was a Peruvian student, Alejandro Toledo, who later went on to be president of Peru. She started in Chimbote working at a school but after six months, transferred to work in a nutrition project in Sapallanga, a small town in the sierra, helping to set up a recuperation center for malnourished pre-school children. In 1968 there was a military coup, but volunteers were not in danger and remained in country. Jean mentioned that some male volunteers were recalled by their draft boards because of the Vietnam war.Interview Accession
