Interview with Robert "Glen" Huff, February 22, 2021
Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Robert (Glen) Huff taught internationally and in the US before joining the Peace Corps at age 65 in 1997 and being stationed in Slovakia teaching English majors in Presov. He loved Slovakia. One assignment was to have students interview the town’s Rabbi to learn about the Holocaust. Secondary projects included helping students prepare for studying abroad and digging ditches. He extended a year, then joined again and taught English at a boarding school in Namibia. He was caught in a dispute between his principal and superintendent, and after a frustrating year with some health problems, left early and settled on the coast in Mississippi. After Hurricane Katrina destroyed his home, he rejoined Peace Corps and helped FEMA in New Orleans, was a response volunteer in Jamaica where he taught older students who had never attended school, and was a response volunteer again in the Philippines where his task was to help the town prepare in case of a disaster. He adored Jamaica where he lived on top of a mountain but left the Philippines early because he did not have the support to do his job. He’s given talks to many groups about the Peace Corps since returning.Interview Accession
