Project: Family Farms of Kentucky: Transition from Farming To Alternate Employment in Eastern Kentucky Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Couch was raised on a farm with nine brothers and sisters. He talks about all the different chores that he and his siblings did when he was growing up. The school was a four mile walk from their house, and because of this Couch was only able to go through the fourth grade. Couch worked primarily in the lumber industry at different sawmills around Harlan County, and eventually worked his way up to owning his own lumber operation. After retiring from the sawmill, he started a tree farm and he talks about the different things that he does to cultivate trees and what he thinks should be done to improve the timber industry.Interview Accession
