Interview Summary

Interview with Eleanor Dodson - Belfast, ME

Originally from a small town in Western Massachusetts, Eleanor begins her interview by talking about her family. She describes the winters, the barn her dad built for her horse, the pigs they owned. She talks about leaving home at age fifteen just before her parents? divorce to go to boarding school in New Hampshire. There she continued running cross country and became captain of the team. She recalls feeling alone when she learned of her parents divorce from afar. She remembers her adolescence as being spent in a team environment and talks about her experiences as an athlete.

Eleanor was so happy to find out she was pregnant. She describes the baby like a little ball, the first time she felt her move inside her. She always wanted to be a mother. She shares her feelings about being alone and how her parents and the father of the baby wanted her to have an abortion. She talks about choosing a care provider, wanting a home birth but ultimately having the baby in the hospital due to high blood pressure. Eleanor says she felt a part of something bigger, a tribe of women when she was giving birth. She describes becoming a mother as the most love she has ever felt.
