Interview Summary
Brenda Skillman graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1972. In this interview she discusses her family background, childhood, and early education in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. She talks about her ancestors, including white slave owners and Native Americans. She talks about attending school during the civil rights movement, and her experiences in both segregated and integrated schools. Skillman talks about her decision to attend college, and why she chose to attend the University of Kentucky despite its negative reputation within the Black community. She talks about race relations on campus, and discusses specific instances of discrimination she experienced. She talks about the Black Student Union protesting the university band playing "Dixie" at sporting events. She talks about her participation in extracurricular activities, and talks about her most memorable moments at UK.
