Interview Summary
This interview is the second of a two part interview with Gordon Garner. [See 1989OH157 Env 011 for the first interview.]Gordon Garner talks about why planning and firm policies are important to control development and growth. He gives examples in Lexington, Louisville, and rural areas of Kentucky. He talks about his employer, Metropolitan Sewer District's planning and policies in regard to sewers and development in Louisville. He talks about Kentucky's natural water resources and how they became polluted. He talks about ways the water quality in Kentucky has been improved, such as wastewater treatment. He talks about the issue of storm drains which allow rainwater runoff to enter the water supply, and why this is a problem. He talks about his work improving water quality on Indian reservations, and discusses why many people working for the EPA began in the public health sector. He talks about the changes that will be necessary in the future to continue protecting natural resources.
