Interview with Bailey Payne, September 28, 2023

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Bailey Payne, Dominican Republic 1996-1998. Upon arriving in the Dominican Republic after graduating from college, among Payne’s reactions were the vibrancy and the loudness of the country. Payne was posted in Sabana de la Mar, near Los Haitises National Park, where he worked an an environmental consultant for park rangers, providing presentations on best practices in environmental protection. In an effort to reach villagers, he used a UNESCO grant to create a set of puppets and a puppet show the purpose of which was to alleviate littering in the park and in the villages, as well as to call attention to the endangered species in the park. He was also instrumental in procuring a computer for the administrators in his office and then taught them to use it. Payne’s Peace Corps experiences spurred him into his profession as an environmental educator, using this fluency in Spanish to reach immigrant populations. He became a life-long volunteer; he gained a sense of self-worth and self-value. While struggling with learning Spanish the first year of service, a fellow PCV said to him: “The more of an ass you are the first year, the more of a genius you’ll be the second.”
