Nick Russon was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Namibia from 2015-2017. He served in the Education sector. When arriving for in service training his training group heard choir greet them. Nick’s parents are Returned Volunteers so he always knew about the Peace Corps. He was a history major so he earned a CELTA and re-applied and was accepted to teach secondary school. Nick was a Coverdell Fellow after service. He taught 8th and 11th grade English and ran drama, chess and media appreciation clubs as a secondary project. The school was on an old Army base left by the South African military and he lived in the officer’s house. Nick said that the meal staples were a white porridge and meat. Meat signaled a person’s status in the community so environmental conditions caused stress because the cows were dying. Drought conditions also caused the currency to fluctuate.
