Interview Summary

Joann describes why she and her husband chose to buy their house. Michael also talks about the school systems in New Jersey. Michael discusses their evacuation when Hurricane Irene hit which turned out to be for no reason since nothing happened. Joann talks about making preparations for the storm. The Melfis describe how they felt as they decided to stay in their home while the water kept rising and rising. Michael discusses being on a truck going around helping people who needed to be rescued from their houses. He also says he had been standing in the water for so long he couldn't feel his legs anymore. Joann describes the coming-together of the neighborhood after the storm and how they were trying to make a plan. Michael talks about being helped by friends who had a generator since their power was out. Joann describes the problem with looters in her neighborhood after the storm. Michael also talks about the housing assistance FEMA was able to provide. He also describes how after a disaster like Hurricane Sandy hitting, it is hard to go back to normal.
