Interview Summary

Diane Raleigh served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Somalia in 1962-1963, and Nigeria in 1963-1964, working in Health and Education. Because of her earlier involvement in a Shriver program, Experiment in International Living, Raleigh was invited by Sargent Shiver to apply to Peace Corps. Raleigh and her husband accepted an invitation to Somalia, where she taught English in Mogadishu. Their training was conducted in the U.S., at New York University. In their second year of service, they were reassigned to Owerri, Nigeria. Her assignment was to teach English, but identifying a community need, Raleigh took the initiative to establish the Owerri Motherless Baby Home. Many years later, she returned to Africa and established the Olmoti Clinic and Health Center to serve a Maasai community in Tanzania. The interview discusses events leading to Raleigh’s Peace Corps Service, working in Africa, her accomplishments, and life after Peace Corps.
