Interview Summary

Kentuckian Howard Tilghman is interviewed by history professor Charles P. Roland about his relationship with former Kentucky governor Albert B. "Happy" Chandler. Tilghman discusses his close, personal relationship with Chandler, which persisted throughout Chandler's political career and continues to the time this interview was recorded. Tilghman discusses meeting Chandler, his career as baseball commissioner, and his two campaigns for the Kentucky governorship in 1935 and 1955. Tilghman discusses the aspects of Chandler's political career and personal character which he admires, including Chandler's abstention from alcohol and tobacco. He talks about rumors about Chandler gambling or having affairs, which he dispels. He talks about Chandler's personality and their friendship.
