Interview Summary

Bella Gottesman recounts her time in occupied Romania during World War II. Gottesman was born and raised in Romania. When she was 20 years old the war began and the Russians occupied her home country. She speaks about the way her life changed while living under occupation and what she and her family did to try and escape.

Gottesman's father was arrested twice by the Russians and eventually sentenced to be sent to a work camp in Siberia where he later died. Gottesman talks about the trial and how she felt that her father should not have been sent away.

Later Romania was placed under German occupation and as a Jewish person Gottesman experienced persecution at the hands of the occupying Germans. She recalls instances of persecution from the Germans and various anecdotes about how she and her family managed to survive the occupation.
