Interview Summary
Redmon talks about developing an interest in the arts and crafts at a young age, and attending Western Kentucky University for commercial art. She discusses working as a graphic artist with the Department of Public Information in the Kentucky state government, moving to the Department of Tourism, and joining the newly created Kentucky Craft Marketing Program. Redmon describes her involvement with department store promotions for Bloomingdale's that featured Kentucky crafts. Redmon talks about the Kentucky Marketing Program creating the Kentucky Market, an event which began in Lexington and included hundreds of arts and crafts exhibitors. She discusses the evolution of the Kentucky Marketing Program from the 1980s to the 2000s. Redmon talks about the process of opening the Appalachian Artisan Center and the Kentucky School of Craft in Hindman, Kentucky. She talks about how, in its application for state government funding for the Appalachian Artisan Center, Knott County focused on its culture promoting the arts and expressed a desire to build an arts-based economy tied to tourism. Redmon talks about the future of the craft industry and her concerns. She discusses the Kentucky traditions and institutions that allowed the Craft Marketing Program to be successful and helped develop the craft industry.Interview Accession
