Interview Summary

Ina Mae Painter was a local from West Virginia who became involved in lobbying for stricter strip mining legislation in the 1960s. In this interview she discusses her background, how she learned of strip mining and how she became involved in the effort to regulate the industry. She talks about how a group from the community lobbied the Charleston legislature and the cooperation and opposition they received. She talks about how the Volunteers in Service to America affected the group's efforts and whether it was unusual for citizens to lobby the legislature.
