Interview Summary
In this interview banking executive and former mayor of Beattyville, Kentucky, Charles Beach III, describes himself and his tenure in local government. He discusses the problems faced by his community in Eastern Kentucky, including a lack of interstates or parkways nearby, an undereducated workforce, and inadequate medical care. He explains how these problems, exacerbated by the state government's neglect of the region, have made it difficult to attract new industry to Beattyville. He also describes some of Beattyville's triumphs, such as new road construction, improvement of public services like the 911 service, and increased access to natural gas and clean water.
