Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Amy Muscoplat served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Republic of Kiribati, from 1997 to 1999, in the Rural Health Education Program. Prior to volunteering, Amy worked as a librarian, and headed the news research department for the Palm Beach Post. She had traveled and volunteered overseas before, and always wanted to join Peace Corps. Language, culture, and technical training for Amy’s group was conducted in Tarawa, Kiribati’s capital, with short village stays on outer islands. Her assignment was to be the health volunteer for the outer island of Marakei, and she lived in Rawannawi village. Amy’s job involved conducting Public Health Workshops, in collaboration with local health staff. She also incorporated Environmental Education. The interview discusses training, living in a remote island environment, Kiribati culture, their attitude toward Peace Corps Volunteers, and reflections on Peace Corps service. Emphasis is on the importance of personal relationships with those in her community.
