Project: Peace Corps: COVID-19 Evacuated Peace Corps Volunteers Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Emmery Brakke is an evacuated Peace Corps Volunteer who served in Ukraine from September 2017 until she was evacuated in March 2020 due to COVID-19. She worked with a city council as a community economic development volunteer. She was 3 months into an extension of service and was also working with Peace Corps as a Volunteer Leader when she was evacuated. Her grandmother was born in Ukraine and after working in entertainment for a few years Emmery saw an opportunity to serve in Ukraine and applied. She describes her work with the city council, including a big recycling project and her enjoyment of working with other volunteers and staff. Ukraine was early to close borders, so she speaks about how her evacuation differed from other countries. She describes how Peace Corps changed her life’s direction and her future plans.Interview Accession
