Interview Summary
Annette Brown was a teacher in Henderson and Corydon, Kentucky before and after the integration of schools. In this interview she discusses her family background, including her grandfather who owned a blacksmith shop in Henderson prior to Emancipation. She talks about her early love of reading, and her and her siblings' education in Henderson and through college. She talks about her experiences teaching in rural all-Black schools, and the teachers' protest against the lower wages received by the Black teachers. She discusses race relations in Henderson during her childhood, including the Black-owned businesses in town, as well as the places that were segregated, and lists the occupations available for African Americans. She describes a lynching that occurred in Henderson around the 1920s.Interview Accession
