Interview Summary
In this interview, Frank B. Dryden, former administrative assistant to Senator Earle C. Clements, describes the circumstances surrounding the appointment to his position, his position responsibilities, and the Senate office. He talks about his first impressions of Clements, Clements' personality, and the relationship between Clements and Lyndon B. Johnson. Dryden discusses Clements' relationship with African Americans in Kentucky and Clements' opinion of integration. He talks about Clements' foreign policy experience, Vietnam, and his reactions to the policies of John Foster Dulles. Dryden discusses Senator Joe McCarthy, Clements' criticism of the Eisenhower administration, and Clements' relationship with lobbyists. He also talks about Clements' reactions to Chandler's campaign for governor in 1955 and Thruston Morton's candidacy for senator in 1956. In addition, Dryden describes the reactions of Clements and the staff to his defeat, Clements' time as director of the Senate Campaign Committee, and Clements as president and consultant of the Tobacco Institute.Interview Accession
