Interview with Tommy Vinh Bui, January 24, 2022
Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Tommy Vinh Bui served in Kazakhstan as a community development and education Peace Corps volunteer from March 2011 to November 2011 when he was evacuated. He was part of the last cohort to serve in Kazakhstan, the 9th largest country in the world. He did his training in Almaty and traveled 12 hours by train to his site of service, Kyzylorda, located in a desert area with very cold winters and very hot summers. There Tommy worked as a teacher in the local pedagogical college, teaching English and curriculum development. During the summer months, he worked at a summer camp in a lusher location with middle school/high school youth on cultural arts and crafts. Tommy credits his Peace Corps service experience as a major contributor to his personal and professional growth. He continues to carry out Peace Corps’ 3rd goal by writing articles and giving presentations at local schools and colleges.Interview Accession
