Interview Summary
A graduate of Dunbar High School, Charles Livisay obtained his college degree from Kentucky State College in 1935. He taught physical education at Douglas High School (1948-1966) and Lexington Bryan Station (1966-1974). He was an unsuccessful candidate for state representative against Foster Petit in the 1964 primary. Livisay discusses the quality of education offered by Douglas while delineating the differences between the racially segregated white and black schools of the era. The quality of curricula, facilities, salaries and sports are mentioned including the rivalry which existed between Douglas and Dunbar High Schools. Livisay recounts his memories of the civil rights movement and the integration of Fayette County schools in the 1960's.Interview Accession
