Interview Summary

Joseph Woodyard joined the Army directly out of high school and served as a Calvary Scout from 2000-2004. During this time his unit took one tour of duty in Iraq from March 2003-March 2004 where Woodyard earned four Army Commendations with Valor and a Purple Heart. In this interview, Woodyard describes his role in the invasion of Iraq, including a description of the tank battle in Hillah, the transition from an invading to an occupying force, and Army relations with private contractors in Iraq. Additionally, Woodyard discusses the transition back to civilian life and his battle with PTSD.
