Interview Summary

Julius Berry recounts some of his personal background and his academic achievements, and also speaks about his athletic career and a racially charged incident he experienced as a youth. Berry discusses his efforts during the civil rights movement and the goals of the organization CORE. He speaks about his time as city advocate. Berry addresses the use of affirmative action with the Lexington city government. Berry explains that the required numbers of people of color are being met, however there is still much to be done to see that positions of power and high paying positions are offered to people of color as well. Berry explains why the black businesses in Lexington have decreased since integration. He also explains the role that the church could play in revitalizing the economic sufficiency of the black community.
