Interview with Randolph Hobler, September 9, 2021
Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Randolph Hobler served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Libya from 1968-1969 in an Education program. He spoke French and Spanish, and had requested an assignment in South America but was assigned to Libya. His group of about 100 trained at a Naval station in Utah, north of Salt Lake City. Training emphasized Arabic language and TOEFL instruction. Following a week in Tripoli, Randy moved to his site, a small village in the mountains, where he taught English to fourth and fifth graders. He was the only volunteer in a village with no other English speakers. His Peace Corps service ended abruptly after one year, when King Idris was overthrown in 1969 in a revolution led by Muammar Gaddafi. Randy returned to the United States and taught with Teacher Corps for a year. He later worked for two years in Saudi Arabia, and has written a 101 Arabian Tales: How We All Persevered in Peace Corps Libya, a book which collects the experiences of Peace Corps-Libya volunteers.Interview Accession

You may come across language in UK Libraries Special Collections Research Center collections and online resources that you find harmful or offensive. SCRC collects materials from different cultures and time periods to preserve and make available the historical record. These materials document the time period when they were created and the view of their creator. As a result, some may demonstrate racist and offensive views that do not reflect the values of UK Libraries.
If you find description with problematic language that you think SCRC should review, please contact us at SCRC@uky.edu.
