Interview with Clyde Reeves, February 17, 1984
Project: Lawrence W. Wetherby Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Mr. Reeves begins this interview discussing his personal background and recalls how and why Governor A. B. Chandler appointed him as Commissioner of Revenue in 1937. He recalls how he got along with Lieutenant Wetherby under the Clements administration in 1948, addresses both the relationship between Clements and Wetherby from his perspective, and the transition of authority from Clements to Wetherby. Reeves gives details of his department, his normal work routine, his relationship with the Department of Finance, and of the technology that was available for him to use at that time. He recalls the 1951 extraordinary session of the General Assembly, and of how the state of Kentucky generated revenue during the Wetherby tenure. Reeves makes a comparison of the state's financial being in the 1950's and in the 1980's. He concludes speaking of leaving the commissioner's position in 1952, his successor, and about sales tax.Interview Accession
