Interview with Stacey Downey, August 17, 2021

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Stacey Downey served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Poland, from 1992 through 1994, in the TEFL program. A desire to be of service, travel, and learn languages drew Stacey to Peace Corps. Stacey applied while in graduate school. Stacey was in the Poland V training cohort. Pre-service training took place in Warsaw, with an emphasis on Polish language. Stacey’s host family experience was very positive. Stacey was assigned to Wyższa Szkoła Biznesu, a business college in the city of Nowy Sącz in southeastern Poland. The interview discusses Stacey’s motivation for volunteering; Peace Corps training; working and living at her site; and views on the value of Peace Corps service. Stacey is Jewish, with ancestral ties to Central Europe. Although she notes that Poland was still reconciling its experiences during World War II and the atrocities committed on Polish soil, her overall experience was extremely positive, and resulted in a deep connection with Poland. Stacey married a fellow Poland Returned Peace Corps Volunteer (RPCV). They remain in contact with fellow volunteers and continue to be involved in RPCV activities.
