Interview with Steph Munson, June 23, 2021
Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Abstract: Steph Munson As a part of her graduate program in International Education, Munson applied to Peace Corps as an internship, one that turned into a 27+ month experience. She studied the Ukrainian language in pre-service training outside of Kyiv, where her teacher lined the walls of his living room with wallpaper plastered with vocabulary and verb endings. She arrived in Mukachevo in Western Ukraine at the end of the term so “filled in” for teachers, speaking only English to her pupils. Volunteers were put on “stand fast” as political unrest threatened their safety. From January-February 2014, volunteers stood fast, were “consolidated” in her spacious apartment, and, finally, evacuated in February 2014. Munson felt that she abandoned her school, not able to fulfill her commitment to Peace Corps. In the summer of 2015, she returned to Mukachevo as a Response Volunteer where she completed her work in the gymnasium. “You meet amazing people in Peace Corps – volunteers, staff in Kyiv, school administrators,” according to Munson.Interview Accession
