Interview with Joseph Vincent Nixon, March 27, 2022
Project: West Chester University: Vietnam Era Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Joe Nixon is a former United States reserve from Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania who flew with the VP-21 Squadron (Fixed-wing Patrol Squadron). Fascinated by one particular aircraft that would fly overhead in his childhood, Nixon chose to enter the reserve at the Willow Grove Naval Air Station in 1966. Nixon began aircrew school in Jacksonville, Florida where he learned how to operate aircrafts and handle different types of emergency scenarios in the air and went into active duty for seven years. Although never landing in Vietnam, his squadron patrolled seas in various areas, mainly in the Mediterranean, for Vietnamese submarines using buoys that detected sound. Nixon’s most memorable travels was to Maine where he met his now wife towards the end of his active duty.Interview Accession
