Interview Summary

John H.G. ("Skeets") Kelly volunteered for the Navy and served as a turret officer aboard the USS Maryland. He participated in operations throughout the Pacific, including Saipan, Leyte, and Okinawa. The Maryland was hit by a Japanese torpedo off the coast of Saipan, then sent to Pearl Harbor for repairs, where it was almost burned by a saboteur. It was caught in a typhoon en route to Palau, and attacked by kamikazes at Leyte and Okinawa. Kelly describes life aboard the battleship, and discusses the Battle of Leyte Gulf in detail.
