Interview Summary
Jane DeCourcy Wong was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Malaysia from 1965-68. She discusses joining the Peace Corps as an anti-war statement, training in Hilo, Hawaii, Peace Corps Malaysia not being prepared for so many volunteers, and her experience teaching chemistry, biology and health science using a British-influenced curriculum at the Ibrahim Secondary School in Sungai Patani. She talks about life-long friendships she made with fellow female teachers and students, eventually marrying a fellow Chinese-Malaysian art teacher. She also talks about multiple cultures in Malaysia as well as her travels in Malaysia, to the Philippines and Thailand during Peace Corps service and her return trips to Malaysia with her family. She reflects on PCV’s contribution to significantly raising the educational attainment of Malaysians; introducing Malaysia to Americans; and her own changed world view, including seeing things from others point of view and tolerance for people doing things differently.Interview Accession
