Interview Summary

Ned Garver, from Ohio, was a Major League right-handed pitcher who played mostly for second division teams such as the St. Louis Browns and the Detroit Tigers. In this interview, he talks about his early interest in baseball, his signing with the St. Louis Browns organization, his Minor League baseball career in the Ohio State League, how he earned a place on the St. Louis Browns team, pitching to Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams, Bill and Charlie DeWitt, Satchel Paige's talent as a pitcher, Bill Veeck, Eddie Gaedel's batting in a game, Cliff Fannin, his (Garver's) Browns teammates, and what it was like to be a good pitcher playing for a generally mediocre team. Other topics include Paul Richards, Sherm Lollar, the Browns' 1951 season, endorsements that he (Garver) did after that season, his reasons for not testifying for the Celler Committee, Larry Doby, Satchel Paige, his (Garver's) thoughts on the reserve clause, and his being traded to the Detroit Tigers.
