Interview Summary
Margaret Newell, an acquaintance of Happy Chandler during his time spent living in Versailles, Kentucky, begins the interview by describing Chandler's natural singing ability. Newell then discusses Chandler's temper and briefly talks of his love life. Newell also characterizes what Chandler was like during his time spent living at her mother's boarding house in Versailles. Chandler's high level of self-confidence is detailed. Factors that played into Chandler's political success are also mentioned. Additionally, the interviewee shares some of the reactions of people to Chandler's success. Chandler's temper and upbringing in relation to his knowledge of manners and social customs are examined. Chandler's personality and the dynamics between Chandler and Newell's family at the boarding house are explored.
