Interview with Margaret "Marge" Kelly, October 20, 2021
Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Margaret "Marge" Kelly served in Ghana, 1986-1988, teaching math at a boys’ technical college in Kikam, near the coast on the Western Region, where she was the sole female teacher. She’s proud to have visited every region in Ghana. She joined Peace Corps upon graduating college. Born in the Sixties, Marge was aware of “the toughest job you’ll ever love” ads; she applied directly at the field office in Philadelphia. Her mother was a Scottish immigrant, and so she had already developed respect for other countries and cultures. Marge spent 6 weeks training in Alamosa, Colorado with her teaching cohort (the 25th Ghanaian cohort) before leaving for Accra and 6 more weeks of training in Tamale. There she received instruction in Fante and Nzema languages. Marge said Peace Corps taught her patience, to listen and that we’re “one humankind”. She said Peace Corps is the “best opportunity you can give yourself”.Interview Accession
