Interview with Alvin M. Seals, July 25, 1978

Interview Summary

A member of the Fayette County Board of Education, Mr. Seals graduated from Douglas High School and Smith College in Little Rock, Arkansas. He received his master's degree in sociology from the University of Kentucky in 1963 and worked at Southern University in Baton Rouge for four years. Mr. Seals returned to Kentucky in 1968 to work for the Community Action Program and has since taught at Kentucky State University. He was involved with the NAACP in Little Rock and Lexington during the civil rights movement and recalls these experiences. The political involvement of African Americans in Lexington since 1940 is discussed, along with the assistance offered to the African American community by some white politicians. He recalls his experiences with the Board of Education and the role he played within that organization, and the treatment received by African American students within the schools.
