Interview Summary

Interview with Abida Dini, Virginia

In this interview, Abby Dini - new mom, social worker and administrator for Richmond, VA?s first free standing birth center talks about her life work, her passion for women?s rights and health, and her journey to becoming a new mom.

Originally from Long Island (via Miami and CT), Abby and her husband moved to Richmond four years ago, for Abby to attend graduate school for social work. Their son, Adrian, is a month old, and present for the recording. Abby shares how she and her husband met and describes their relationship.

Much of Abby?s life, post-high school, has been centered around her passion for women?s health and rights. She shares several stories illustrating her ?pro-woman? philosophy and her calling to work with women. Prior to working for the birthing center, Abby worked for Planned Parenthood - a strong believer in their work and women?s right to choose. She also worked as a doula and childbirth educator. She also spent time abroad, in Guatemala, working with women.

Abby spends a great deal of time talking about her pregnancy, her birth experience and how being a mom has changed her. She begins talking about the importance of sisterhood, and the role it played in her pregnancy and birth. She goes on to talk about her positive mental approach to her pregnancy and shares her birth story.

Abby talks abut her birth in great detail. Adrian came earlier and faster than she and her husband had imagined. After laboring at home for quite a while, Abby gave birth to her son, Adrian in the hospital, surrounded by the women she works with at the birthing center and her husband. A month after the birth of their son, Abby and her husband are just trying to adjust to being new parents.
