Interview Summary

Elmer R. Staib was born in Louisville, Kentucky on November 26, 1919. Staib joined the Army on January 17, 1941 when he was 17 years old and was part of the 610th Tank Destroyer Battalion and reached the ranks of Lieutenant before going overseas. Staib spent time at Camp Hood in Texas and Camp Atterbury in Indiana. Staib went overseas on The Amsterdam, a Dutch ship and landed in England and was then transported to help with the Invasion of Normandy. Staib was also present at the Battle of the Bulge in the Ardennes Forest. In this interview Staib talks about what life was like at the front lines of battle, his experience with enemy prisoners and his experience with German and French civilians.
