Interview with Edward Rowley, April 16, 2021
Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Edward Rowley served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Colombia from 1966 to 1968 in the Agriculture and Applied Nutrition Program, and in Swaziland from 1981 to 1986 as Associate Director for Agriculture and Rural Development. Rowley grew up in rural Minnesota and had a strong, hands-on background in agriculture. He was involved in the Kennedy campaign, and applied to Peace Corps during college. Training was conducted at New Mexico State University and included a homestay near Toluca, Mexico. Rowley’s assignment was in Barrio El Salado, near Ibagué. His job fell under the Integrated Program of Applied Nutrition (PINA). Rowley worked with local farmers, started a 4H Club, and worked with a mothers’ group developing community and home gardens. He mentored and conducted workshops for other volunteers. Several years after completing service in Colombia, Peace Corps reached out to Rowley to recruit him for a staff position. He and his family spent five years in Swaziland. Rowley remained in touch with friends in Colombia and returned for visits with his wife. Rowley never misses an opportunity to speak about Peace Corps.Interview Accession
