Interview Summary
Former Kentucky politician, Earle C. Clements was a governor of Kentucky and served as a U.S. Senator and U.S. Representative. Clements has been appointed to various offices like Kentucky State Highway Commissioner and director of the U.S. Senate Democratic Campaign Committee, among others. He served as the president of the Tobacco Institute for more than a decade. In this interview, Clements discusses some of the gubernatorial policy initiatives he left behind when he was elected to be one of Kentucky's U.S. Senators. Clements discusses his impetus to run for the U.S. Senate and his preparations to leave the governorship. He addresses legislation and policy pertaining to agriculture, and reflects upon the policies of Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman. Topics addressed also include tourism policies in Kentucky, his relationship with KEA while he was governor, civil rights, and the Senate Investigation Committee led by Joe McCarthy.Interview Accession
