Interview Summary
Watson Wise, a classmate of John Sherman Cooper's at Yale University, begins the interview by recalling how he first met Cooper. Wise talks of founding the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) with Cooper and traveling to Europe to assess the conditions there following World War II. Additionally, the interviewee describes a trip to Italy with Cooper, also for helping to start NATO. Cooper's football and basketball career at Yale is considered. Wise describes Cooper's personality. Wise then lists Cooper's accomplishments at Yale. Cooper's struggles with providing for his mother and siblings after the death of his father are emphasized. Cooper's qualities that allowed him to be an effective Senator are detailed. To conclude the interview, Wise tells a story about Alben Barkley, which offers an insight into Kentucky politics.Interview Accession
