Interview Summary

Mr. Stewart has been the principal of Russell Cave Elementary School since 1973. He graduated from Kentucky State College with a degree in physical education and received his masters degree from the University of Kentucky. Formerly a teacher at Douglas High School, Mr. Stewart had spent 21 years in the Fayette County School system up to the time of the interview. He discusses the conditions in the segregated, blacks only schools including facilities, student to teacher ratio, and the salary scales for African American teachers. Also detailed by Mr. Stewart are the changes brought about by integration and the Board of Education's attitude toward teacher involvement in the civil rights movement.
