Interview with Amie Bishop, September 17, 2021
Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Amie Bishop served in the Peace Corps in Morocco from 1983-1985, first as a TEFL volunteer and then as a special education teacher. During training in Azrou, Amie made many lasting friendships with other trainees, including Chris Stevens, the Libyan Ambassador who was killed in 2011 in Benghazi. Amie was originally assigned to the rural community of Afourer to teach English and the local high school. She only served there for 8 months due to illness for which she was medically evacuated for 6 weeks. Later Amie was assigned to Marrakech, where she helped start a program for children with cerebral palsy and other disabilities. The work was especially rewarding as most children had never had access to rehabilitation services. Amie worked with extremely inspirational women, enjoyed exploring the larger town and meeting new people. After her service Amie went on to get a MSW and MPH at Columbia University.Interview Accession
