Interview with Nancy R. Koenig, May 17, 2021
Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Nancy R. Koenig served in Romania as an over-50 volunteer from 2007 to 2009 as an English Language teacher. She was inspired by her sister who had served when she was younger, and after completing her degree she decided the time was right for her as well. After training in Ploiesti, she was assigned to the small agricultural village of Cudalbi. Living in a 5th floor walkup where she had to build a fire daily to keep warm in the winter, she loved the village and taught in two schools. She found the villagers and her counterparts extremely welcoming and helpful. Besides teaching English in the schools, she set up and taught English to adults in the village. She assisted in developing a local boys baseball team and helped with summer camps in other parts of the country. She had many adventures and loved the fresh, delicious food. After returning home, she worked several jobs before finding her calling working with adults with disabilities.Interview Accession
