Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Brian Foster served as an education volunteer in Namibia from 2006-2008. He begins by talking about his father’s experience in Peace Corps as his motivation to join, and the application and staging process. He shares stories from his training experience, including model school, in Omupanda. Brian shares many interesting stories and lessons learned from his time teaching high school English and Geography classes while also doing several secondary projects and helping to improve the school at his site. Brian discusses the influences of past colonialism within Namibian social, cultural, and political contexts, the lasting effects of the Namibian War of Independence, and the Namibian interest in the 2008 US Election. He also discusses what he returned home to with the 2008 Recession. Please note that this interview was partially recorded using a handheld device, and thus the quality is shaky.
